ImagiPass as a fully portable application

Like any other Windows application, ImagiPass can be installed locally on the hard disk of a family PC. When it is installed on a local hard disk, ImagiPass is permanently available on that system. You can then run ImagiPass on that PC, connect to the Internet and enter passwords.

But at times you might very well find yourself away from home using a host PC not equipped with ImagiPass, and still need to enter passwords. This is why ImagiPass is entirely designed as a fully portable application that can also be installed on a USB flash drive. You can then take the USB key with you wherever you go, plug it into any available PC, and run ImagiPass from the USB key. Note that when you launch ImagiPass from a memory flash drive, no entries are made in the registry or system of the host PC. And when you unplug the USB key, no data are ever left behind by ImagiPass on the host PC.

When you plug a flash drive into a host PC, it is automatically added as a logical drive to the system. The USB key drive can then be used as any other logical drive from that PC.

How to install ImagiPass on a flash drive

  1. If ImagiPass is already installed on your PC, go to Step 3.
  2. If ImagiPass is not already installed on your PC, use the standard ImagiPass setup file, and install it locally on your PC.
  3. Create a new folder on the flash drive and name it ImagiPass.
  4. Copy the contents of the ImagiPass folder on your PC (by default, "C:\Program Files\ImagiPass\") to the "ImagiPass" folder created on the USB drive in Step 3.

How to launch ImagiPass from a flash drive

You can launch ImagiPass from a USB drive in several different ways:

  1. Basic manual method:

    1. Run Windows Explorer (or any preferred alternative file manager).
    2. Display the USB logical drive.
    3. Open the "ImagiPass" folder on the USB drive.
    4. Run "ImagiPass.exe".

  2. Smarter "auto-run" method:

    1. Open the Windows NotePad or any other alternative pure text editor. Create a file named "autorun.inf" with the following contents:

      [autorun]
      OPEN=ImagiPass\ImagiPass.exe
      ICON=ImagiPass\ImagiPass.exe
      ACTION=ImagiPass

    2. Save this "autorun.inf" file to the root of the USB drive.

    When this "autorun.inf" file is present on the USB key, and you plug it into a PC, Windows will automatically pop an AutoPlay window up asking you to confirm the launch of ImagiPass. Click "OK" and ImagiPass will appear in the Windows notification area (system tray).

  3. Third-party solutions:

    A number of free or paying utilities available on the Web create a GUI and menus to launch applications installed on USB keys. Here are two such freeware utilities:

    "PStart" (http://www.pegtop.de), and "Portable Start Menu" (http://www.aignes.com/psmenu.htm).

Note. Before unplugging a memory flash drive from a PC, it is preferable to shut down ImagiPass first. Right-click the ImagiPass icon in the Windows notification area (system tray), and choose the "Close" command from the popup menu:
